Buy Us Toll Free Number

On the SMS and voice settings page, you can request phone numbers for use in various countries. For the United States, you can purchase SMS-enabled 10DLC and toll-free numbers, as well as voice-enabled long codes. For other countries, you can purchase voice-enabled long codes.

If you want to purchase a phone number for a country that isn't listed on this page, or if you want an SMS-enabled phone number, you must open a case with AWS Support. For more information about opening an AWS Support case to request dedicated SMS long codes, see Requesting dedicated long codes for SMS messaging with Amazon Pinpoint. For more information about opening an AWS Support case to request dedicated SMS long codes, see Requesting short codes for SMS messaging with Amazon Pinpoint.

On the Define your phone numbers page, for Country, choose the country in which you want to purchase a phone number. You can choose only one country at a time, but you can choose additional countries later if necessary.

If you're requesting a number for use in the United States, choose the phone number type. Depending on the type, you might need to provide additional documentation to support the request. You can choose from the following types of phone numbers:

Unregistered long codes can only be used to send voice messages. If you want a phone number for sending SMS messages, complete the steps in Requesting dedicated long codes for SMS messaging with Amazon Pinpoint.

After you request a TFN, the number will show a status of Pending or Active. If the status is Active, you can send messages from the TFN. If the status is Pending, you must register the number before you can start sending messages. For more information about registering a toll-free number, see US toll-free number registration requirements and process.

For toll-free numbers, the default SMS opt-out and opt-in keywords are STOP and UNSTOP. These keywords are carrier-managed, so no other keywords are supported. When a user responds with STOP or UNSTOP, the response message is also carrier-managed and can't be changed. On the SMS settings page of the Amazon Pinpoint console, the opt-out Keyword and Response message fields are inactive and can't be edited.

US mobile carriers have recently changed their policies, and will require that all toll-free numbers (TFNs) complete a registration process, see Registering your toll-free number for more information. You can check the status of your number by visiting Toll-free number registration status.

To request a 10DLC phone number, you must first register your company and campaign. After you complete these registrations, you can request a phone number and associate it with a 10DLC campaign. For more information about 10DLC, see 10DLC.

If you choose 10DLC, you're prompted to assign the number to a 10DLC campaign. This number can only be used for the associated campaign. A single phone number can't be associated with multiple 10DLC campaigns. If you request a 10DLC number before you have an active 10DLC campaign, Amazon Pinpoint returns an error message. If you don't see a campaign listed, verify the campaign status on the 10DLC tab on SMS and voice settings page.

If you plan to use several different phone numbers with a single 10DLC campaign, you must choose a single message type to use for that campaign. You can't combine promotional and transactional phone numbers in a single 10DLC campaign. For example, if you associate a promotional phone number to a 10DLC campaign, and later decide that you want to associate more numbers with that campaign, you won't be able to associate transactional phone numbers with it.

For Quantity, choose the quantity of numbers that you want to purchase. You can purchase up to 10 numbers in a single request. You can purchase additional numbers later. The Subtotal updates to display the total monthly cost for the quantity of phone numbers that you're purchasing.

Requests for long codes and toll-free numbers are usually approved immediately. If your request is approved, you can access your new phone numbers on the Phone numbers tab of the SMS and voice settings page.

US mobile carriers have recently changed their regulations and require all toll-free numbers (TFNs) to complete a registration process with a regulatory body before September 30, 2022. Check the status of your TFN by going to Toll-free number registration status. For more information about registering your company see Registering your toll-free number.

TFNs are typically used only within the US for transactional messaging, such as registration confirmation or for sending one-time passwords. They can be used for both voice messaging and SMS. Average throughput is three message parts per second (MPS). However, this throughput is affected by character encoding. For more information about how character encoding affects message parts, see SMS character limits in Amazon SNS. For more information about registering a TFN, see Toll-free number registration requirements and process.

Amazon SNS has limited ability to send messages in cases where the messages are blocked (for example, use cases related to controlled substance, or phishing), or when high levels of filtering are expected (for example, high risk financial messages). You may be unable to register TFNs associated with restricted content use cases defined in Guidelines for using toll-free numbers.

Each registration request or use case can only have up to five TFNs. If you believe you qualify for an exemption to this rule, provide a detailed explanation for consideration. List all phone numbers associated with the registration or use case.

TFNs work well for transactional use cases such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) where limited throughput is required. Each TFN can send up to three text messages parts per second, and each customer account can have up to five TFNs. If you're sending over 15 text messages parts per second but less than 100, we recommend you register one or more 10DLC origination IDs. If your use cases require sending more than 100 text messages per second, we recommend you purchase and register one or more short codes. For more details, see Guidelines for using toll-free numbers.

Do not include shortened URLs in your message, or use the number to send a promotional message. Instead use a 10DLC number or a short code. When you use a short code or 10DLC number, you need to register your message templates, which can contain shortened URLs and can be promotional messages. For more about short codes, see Short codes. For more about 10DLC, see 10DLC.

Many Amazon Pinpoint customers use toll-free phone numbers to send messages to their customers in the United States. A toll-free number is a 10-digit number that begins with one of the following three-digit codes: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, or 833. You can use toll-free numbers to send both SMS and voice messages to recipients in the US.

Historically, US toll-free numbers have been available to purchase with no registration required. To prevent spam and other types of abuse, the United States mobile carriers now require new toll-free numbers to be registered as well. The carriers also require all existing toll-free numbers to be registered by September 30, 2022. The carriers will block SMS messages sent from unregistered toll-free numbers after this date.

Information you provide as part of this registration process will be provided to the US carriers through our downstream partners. It can take up to 15 business days for your registration to be processed. To help prevent disruptions of service with your toll-free number, you should submit your registration no later than September 12th, 2022.

You can also use the Amazon Pinpoint console to register toll-free numbers that you already have in your account. For more information about completing the registration process for existing toll-free numbers, see US toll-free number registration requirements and process in the Amazon Pinpoint User Guide.
